A message from Joy Canova, President:
We’re Gearing Up for a Celebration.
Excitement is building for the 2008 Nellie Cashman Woman Business Owner of the Year and the WBO Excellence Award gala, and I must say, it is quite an honor to be involved. As president, I sat on the panel of judges with last year’s honoree, Luly Yang, and other distinguished business-people. I also participated in the catering menu tasting and selection at the Westin Hotel. With me were Nellie-Cashman Chairperson Kathy Clayton and President-Elect Margaret Purvine. This is our second year at the Westin, and we were treated royally by the catering representatives. Another time, I found myself at a meeting with Sponsorship Chair Kelly Nolan and our Nellie finalist’s luncheon sponsor, Microsoft’s very wise and knowledgeable Fernando Hernandez. Also, thanks to Holly Hayes, our public relations line-up is stellar this year and our finalists will be noticed far and wide, in print and on the airways -- even I had the opportunity to promote WBO and our Nellie event in a radio interview on Chat with Women.
So many different and interesting opportunities have come my way because of the Nellie! While the work is spread among many of us, I feel connected to the entire process – and it has been one of the highlights of my year thus far as president. I continue to be amazed at the breadth experiences we all have had and cannot wait to enjoy the fruits of our labors when we honor the extraordinary “Nellie” and “Ellie” finalists.
If you have not done so already, be sure to make your reservations for the Nellie now. It is easy to do online, and I promise you that it is well worth your time to be there. Come support your favorite candidate, or you can even just come to support “yours truly” on stage in my small role. Be there October 1st and let’s celebrate all women entrepreneurs through these fine examples of our peers.
By the way, you can still join the fun in the Nellie activities... we need guest greeters for the event. Call WBO Secretary Susan Shoults today to sign up!
Sincerely,
Joy Canova
WBO 2008 President

In August 2008, glassybaby donated $16,500 to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, through their glassybaby goodwill program. For this donation, $1300 was garnered through sales of Seattle Sunset, which was named to honor Gretchen Mather, founder of Gretchen’s of Course, who succumbed to cancer in 2007. $500.00 resulted from sales of Dream and $14,700 through sales at the University Village for May and June.

August luncheon speaker was Diane Giese, Puget Sound Health Alliance, and the subject was: “The Truth about Health Insurance”. Not surprisingly for this important topic, our luncheon sponsor was AFLAC. Entrepreneurs and small business owners often find themselves in a difficult spot when it comes to health insurance. We hope you appreciated the great information Diane shared; it has been a topic requested by the membership for some time now.
For those of you interested in some of the safety skills learned at the July luncheon, Joanne Factor of Strategic Living is offering members a free audio recording of her presentation in a downloadable MP3 file. Here is the link for access: http://www.StrategicLiving.org/J-Factor-WBO-7-24-08.mp3
