A message from Joy Canova, President:

How does a determined entrepreneur stay competitive in her industry? How about... New skills!

There are numerous vehicles for education and skill-building --- from brick-and-mortar institutions to virtual training. Let’s consider a few. Community colleges offer continuing education programs and non-credit courses. Even 4-year colleges can have specialty programs that add to your current degree and consider business experience as credits. Certification courses are available from organizations such as Astra and the Small Business Administration. Seminars taught by professionals of every field abound – Google for it and see what I mean. Ever heard of Web-ex training programs? By computer, you log into an instructor’s live workspace and follow along audibly by phone or an internet auditory connection such as Skpe. Never before have we had so many ways to stay on top of our industry’s developments. The only missing link is our effort to take that step.

WBO’s 3rd Guiding Principle states: “We believe successful businesswomen are self-directed to seek essential knowledge, skills, and inspiration to meet their goals.” The “self-directed” aspect is essential. Only you and I can take the steps physically and mentally to learn a new skill or tool. As a group, this is part of who we are – life-long learners. It is why we come to hear speakers. It is why we try on new leadership roles within the organization. It is one reason to network.

WBO wants to be a great resource for members to connect with meaningful providers of education. Our 2008 strategic goals draw emphasis to the need to improve our systems and processes. Education is one of those areas in which we are working and there are some exciting new alliances in development. If you have a creative mind and care about connecting members to great education, we want to hear from you! Call or email Robin Gruber, our Education Chairperson, today.

Sincerely,

Joy Canova

WBO 2008 President

Ambassadors Are Recruiting!

The Ambassador Committee is currently recruiting new Ambassadors for the remainder of 2008 and the 2009 year. Being an Ambassador gives you the opportunity to talk to new members and welcome visitors at events. You wear a purple flag on your name badge so visitors and new members can easily identify you. The Ambassador Committee is a fantastic way to meet people and become involved in a way that is fun! The time committment is minimal but the rewards are great! Contact Shawn Mercalde if you are interested!

Americans For UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is pleased to present Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, a social entrepreneur from Afghanistan, at a luncheon in Seattle on February 6, 2009. Afghanistan has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world. With UNFPA’s support, Dr. Yacoobi has inaugurated health clinics and mobile health units, delivering vaccinations, health care, and health education. She has worked tirelessly to increase the literacy of Afghan women and girls despite decades of armed conflict and a ban on girls’ education under the Taliban. Please mark February 6, 2009, on your calendar to join us in honoring Sakena Yacoobi and UNFPA’s work on behalf of the health and dignity of women everywhere. If you would like to attend, sponsor a table, or invite your friends and colleagues to the following important event, please contact Sharon Howe or at 206.282.4706.

Accents et cetera, Inc. was named one of King County 2008 Best Workplaces for Recycling. A retail and online shop that primarily makes gift baskets with Northwest foods, Accents et cetera recycles over three times as much waste as they throw in the garbage. Accents also donates soon to be expired food to Hopelink's food bank. Clean styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap are accepted at Accents et cetera to be reused when baskets are shipped. Holiday Golightly recently released survey findings (http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2008/6/prweb1061964.htm) on trends in Bachelorette parties. We found an overwhelming 88% of respondents are looking for more upscale options when it comes to bachelorette party themes, leaving the days of strippers and raunchy accessories behind. Thank God! Highlights & News

Speaking of new skills, we had a great July luncheon with presenters Joanne Factor of Strategic Living and Karen du Four des Champs of MiKo’s Guest House. Their beautifully blended address and demonstration to our group gave us great safety advice and moves practical for anyone’s use. And yet, it was an invitation to learn more and equip ourselves with skills we hope to never have to use. As an added treat, the audience included two young women guests of members Joanne Wright and Jule Meyer. Many thanks to all who participated.

Do you like to meet people? Of course you do – you belong to Women Business Owners! At our July luncheon, we heard from WBO Ambassador Teri Templin. Her committee is searching for dynamic people to meet and greet new members to WBO. They also help welcome guests at our events and show their pride in WBO membership. Here’s your chance help build our community of businesswomen by volunteering as a WBO ambassador. Contact the chairperson, Lindsey Martin Bass, to get involved.
